the HARM + BALANCE is spooky circuit’s take on the interfax harmonic percolator.
it is an angry, unstable fuzz that breaks up kind of like if you threw a bunch of different sized rocks in a washing machine.
playing the H+B with the “HARM” knob cranked feels like you are playing the washing machine with the door open and it’s spitting all over everyone.
roll back the “HARM” knob and you get a warm and smooth overdrive, kind of like if you put a bunch of towels in the washing machine with the rocks, and the towels were kind of dampening rock bangs, yet still feeling a little unstable.
it absolutely rips on a bass as it is tuned for a full frequency response, retaining a lot of the low end. that being said, it still cuts through, HARD.
using the diode clipping switches, you can explore all the harmonic options and carve out a happy space in the mix. one knob clips the positive side of the wave, and one clips the negative side of the wave, allowing you to mix and match clipping diodes to create asymmetrical clipping harmonics. these diodes all have their own character. its hard to describe, but you can really feel it in the texture of the break up. the 34A, 914, and 5817 diodes have a finer but more jagged texture, giving more compression and “distortion.” the 4007 diode and the 510 mosfet have a larger, rounder texture, giving more punch and a smooth, creamy breakup.
it uses rare GERMANIUM transistors (new old-stock) manufactured back in the 1970s-80s which helps give it its signature warm and creamy tone.
throw the H+B after a reverb or delay and get the most creamy post gain crunch. you can get lofi and subtle with it, or just make it scream.
